1940s
New York
Occupation: Manufacturing: garment
Collection: Library

The mural "Victory of Light over Darkness" by Ernest Fiene was sponsored by the International Ladies Garment Workers Union for the auditorium of the Central Needle Trades High School in New York. "Below on the far right are shown the sweat shop, home work and child labor conditions of early manufacturing in New York," reads an ILGWU pamphlet about the mural, "over which hovers a huge green figure symbolizing greed, who with his right hand clutches the cut cloth."

More of this story is told in Cultural Initiatives – The Union Meets the Met, a section of the Labor Arts exhibit The ILGWU: Social Unionism in Action.
